How admission to online study usually works
Most distance-learning providers publish an entry route for each level of study. This page summarises the typical pattern, using the archived Branton University material as an example of how such information is presented. It is informational only: nothing here is an offer of a place, and applications are not accepted through this site.
Are you ready for online study?
Questions the archive posed to would-be students make a handy self-check:
- Do you feel stuck in your current career path, or are you aiming for a change of field?
- Do you worry that you are too old to return to study? Adult learners are common in distance programmes.
- Can you manage the cost of the fees?
- Do you have the discipline to study without fixed classes?
Add a few of your own: a reliable internet connection, a regular weekly time slot, and a clear goal for the qualification.
Typical entry requirements by level
| Level | Usual starting point |
|---|---|
| Associate degree | High school diploma, GED or an equivalent |
| Bachelor’s degree | High school diploma, GED or an equivalent |
| Associate-to-bachelor’s route | An associate degree or equivalent |
| Master’s degree | A bachelor’s degree or equivalent |
| Doctorate | A master’s degree |
| Undergraduate diploma or certificate | High school diploma or equivalent |
| Graduate diploma or certificate | A bachelor’s degree or equivalent |
The archive described durations from about a month for a short certificate to around two years for the longer self-paced degrees. Real durations depend on the number of credit hours and on how many courses you take at once.
Teaching method
The archived profile described a mix of cooperative learning, virtual classes, critical-thinking exercises and the case method, particularly for business subjects, with off-campus experience encouraged. In practice, ask any provider how much of the course is live, how much is recorded, and how you will interact with a tutor.
Performance evaluation
Assessment in online programmes commonly combines assignments, quizzes, projects and a final exam. Ask to see a sample syllabus showing the weight of each element and the marking scale, and ask who does the marking.
Before you commit
Read our pre-application checklist, compare costs on the fee page and check recognition on the accreditation page. Discount claims and deadlines that expire the same day are best treated with caution.
